Three people have died following a head-on collision on Interstate 68 near Maryland Route 36, with Maryland State Police identifying the victims as John Welin, Karen Berneck and Thomas Stevao. The fatal crash happened Sunday when a Subaru Forester traveling westbound on I-68 crossed the grass median for reasons that remain unknown. The vehicle entered the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a Volkswagen Tiguan. Three Victims Identified Police identified the Subaru driver as John Welin, 79, of Roscoe, Illinois. His passenger, Karen Berneck, 81, also of Roscoe, was also killed in the collision. Thomas Stevao, 25, of Centreville, Virginia, was identified as a passenger in the Volkswagen Tiguan. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash prompted a major emergency response as authorities worked to assist those involved and secure the area. Two Others Injured The Volkswagen was being driven by Patrick Kaczmarek, 25, of Clifton, Virginia, who suffered serious injuries. He was transported by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a local trauma center for treatment. Another passenger, Jacqueline Durham, 25, of Clifton, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for medical care. Authorities have not released further details about the conditions of the injured. Investigation Continues The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation into the fatal collision. Investigators have not yet determined why the Subaru crossed the median and entered the opposing lanes of traffic. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, and additional information could be released as authorities continue working to establish what led to the collision. The deaths of Welin, Berneck and Stevao have left their families and loved ones facing a sudden and devastating loss as the investigation continues.
