Taupō Fire Today – Helicopters and Fire Crews Battle Aggressive Scrub Blaze

TAUPŌ, New Zealand — Emergency crews responded to an aggressive scrub fire on the northern fringe of Taupō on Saturday afternoon, with strong winds and dry conditions helping the blaze spread rapidly.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said crews were called to the fire at Tauhara at approximately 2:24 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a blaze stretching about 150 metres and threatening a building in the area.

Six fire trucks, two water tanks and two helicopters were deployed as emergency crews worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

An eyewitness said the fire initially appeared to be a small brush fire in a paddock before westerly winds caused it to intensify.

Smoke from the blaze became heavy enough to cover the Taupō arterial expressway, while traffic was diverted as emergency services worked at the scene.

Police urged members of the public and motorists to stay away from Broadlands Road in Tauhara to allow firefighters and other emergency personnel to operate safely.

Road Closures and Traffic Delays

Broadlands Road between Miro Street and the East Taupō Arterial was closed to facilitate emergency operations, with traffic management put in place.

Police advised motorists to delay travel through the affected area or find an alternative route.

The conditions presented an additional challenge for firefighters. Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported winds of approximately 15 knots, or just under 30 kilometres per hour, alongside dry conditions.

Emergency Response Underway

Fire crews and helicopter operators continued working to cut off the fire’s spread and extinguish the blaze.

Authorities have not indicated that anyone was injured in the incident based on the information currently available.

Residents and motorists are being asked to follow directions from emergency services and avoid the affected area while firefighting operations continue.
