GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Northwest Guilford Middle School community is mourning the death of student Caden Sorrell, whose passing has left classmates, teachers, teammates and family members facing a heartbreaking loss.

The Northwest Vikings football team honored Sorrell in a memorial message, remembering him by the No. 42 jersey he wore.

Northwest Middle School Principal CeCe Matson also addressed the school community following the tragedy, describing the loss of a student as something that is difficult to put into words.

“There are no easy words to make sense of losing a child,” Matson wrote, extending her condolences to Sorrell’s family, friends, classmates and everyone who knew and loved him.

School officials encouraged students and staff to support one another as they navigate the difficult days ahead.

Matson emphasized the close-knit nature of the school community, saying Northwest is a family that will lean on one another while honoring Sorrell’s memory.

The school’s PTSO has also created a memorial space at the Rock on campus, where students, staff and community members can leave flowers, notes or other expressions of remembrance.

“There are no right words for a loss like this,” the PTSO said while making the memorial available to those wishing to pay tribute.

Football Team Pays Tribute

Sorrell’s connection to the Northwest Vikings football program was also highlighted following his death. The team shared a memorial tribute recognizing the young student-athlete and his No. 42 jersey.

The tribute comes as the broader Northwest Guilford community continues to process the loss.

On Friday, the Northwest Guilford High School football team announced that its game against Page High School had been moved to Saturday following a medical incident that occurred on campus earlier that day.
