SACRAMENTO, Calif. — J. Cole canceled his scheduled concert at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Thursday, August 27, after a fatal crash involving a touring crew member transporting equipment for the rapper’s world tour.

The victim was identified as Jarlath Parkinson, 66, of Jackson, South Carolina, who was driving a big rig carrying equipment connected to the concert. According to the California Highway Patrol, Parkinson died at the scene following the crash on Interstate 5 in Yolo County.

The collision occurred between the Zamora and Dufour areas, northwest of Woodland. Authorities said the truck moved onto the right shoulder before the driver attempted to return to the freeway. The vehicle subsequently lost control and overturned.

No other vehicles were involved, and investigators said they do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

Following news of Parkinson’s death, J. Cole’s Sacramento performance was canceled. The concert was part of “The Fall-Off” world tour, which began July 10 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is scheduled to include more than 70 performances across North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Fans who purchased Sacramento tickets through Ticketmaster are expected to receive automatic refunds. Those who purchased tickets through third-party sellers have been advised to contact their original point of purchase regarding refunds.

The fatal accident has also raised questions about J. Cole’s next scheduled performances. Shows in Oakland on Saturday and Sunday remained listed at the time of the cancellation, although it was unclear whether the tour would continue without changes.

J. Cole is scheduled to continue his tour in Southern California, with a Los Angeles performance planned for September 1.

The death of Parkinson has brought a sudden and painful interruption to the tour, as colleagues and members of the touring team cope with the loss of a crew member who was working behind the scenes to support the Sacramento performance.
