Sean Ragon, the founding frontman of New York neofolk and post-punk group Cult of Youth, has died at the age of 45.

Founding Cult of Youth

Cult of Youth began as Ragon’s solo project in the late 2000s. His early recordings established a dark and atmospheric sound influenced by folk traditions, post-punk, goth and industrial music.

Among his early releases was A Stick to Bind, a Seed to Grow, released in 2008. By 2011, Cult of Youth had developed into a full band and signed with Sacred Bones Records, where the group released a self-titled album followed by Love Will Prevail in 2012 and Final Days in 2014.

The band’s music earned a dedicated following within alternative and underground circles, while Ragon’s role as its principal creative force helped shape its evolving sound.

More Than a Musician

Ragon’s influence extended beyond performing and recording. He opened Heaven Street Records in Brooklyn in 2009, a record store that later operated under other names and became Nexus Records in 2025.

He also operated Blind Prophet Records and participated in numerous experimental and electronic projects. His work included the dark electronic project Venerence, the noise duo Nervenklinik and collaborations connected to the wider experimental music community.

Ragon also toured with Psychic TV in 2016, further expanding his connections across the underground music world.

A Lasting Musical Legacy

Cult of Youth returned with With Open Arms in 2022, drawing from earlier recordings and marking the latest full-length release associated with the project.

Ragon’s death represents a significant loss for the independent music community he spent years contributing to as a musician, record-store owner, label operator and collaborator.

At 45, he leaves behind a body of work that crossed genres while maintaining a distinctly underground identity.
