Pogacar Accident, Vuelta a Espana – Tadej Pogacar Abandons Race After Serious Stage Eight Crash

Tadej Pogacar has abandoned the Vuelta a Espana after suffering a heavy crash during Stage 8, bringing his bid for a first Vuelta title to an unexpected end.

The 27-year-old Slovenian was the overwhelming favourite after winning three stages during the opening week and establishing a commanding lead in the general classification.

The crash occurred with just over 30 kilometres remaining on the route toward Xeraco. Pogacar appeared to swerve while riding within the peloton before hitting the road heavily. Several riders around him were also caught in the incident.

Pogacar Suffers Injuries

Pogacar sustained a significant wound to his left shoulder and the left side of his face, with blood visible above his eye and around his shoulder.

Medical staff quickly reached the rider. Although Pogacar initially stood up without assistance and appeared prepared to continue, he soon sat down again before being helped into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

The precise extent of his injuries was not immediately clear.

Race Leader Forced to Withdraw

Pogacar’s abandonment is particularly significant given his extraordinary Grand Tour record. This was reportedly his first Grand Tour withdrawal in 10 attempts and the first time he had failed to finish on the podium.

He had entered the Vuelta after winning the 2026 Tour de France and had looked in dominant form in Spain, winning Stages 1, 4 and 6.

His sudden departure has completely reshaped the race.

Enric Mas moved into the overall lead, with Primoz Roglic second at one minute. Felix Gall sits third at 1:11, while Britain’s Oscar Onley is fifth overall and leads the best young rider classification.

The Vuelta now continues without its pre-race favourite, while Pogacar’s recovery and return to competition will depend on the results of his medical assessment.
