Michael Keats Missing in Nepal Floods – Family Await News of Australian Outdoor Education Leader

The family, friends and wider outdoor education community of Michael Keats are facing an anxious wait for news after the 37-year-old Australian was reported missing following devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.

Keats was among Australians reported unaccounted for after severe weather struck the northern Nepal region near the Nepal-Tibet border. Reports said he had been trekking in the area when the disaster occurred, with concerns growing after contact with him and others in his group could not be established.

Keats is known as an outdoor education leader and keen bushwalker whose work involved helping others experience and connect with the outdoors. His activities have included organising outdoor camps, father-and-son trips and leadership adventures.

His family described him as the “most beautiful soul”, expressing their devastation after learning that he was among those missing.

Friend Jamie Lepre said there had been no word from Keats for more than 48 hours following the flooding. Nepalese authorities subsequently identified him among Australian nationals unaccounted for in the northern Rasuwa district.

Before travelling to Nepal, Keats was also involved in community outdoor activities, including an event focused on cleaning up local waterways.
