DURHAM, N.C. — Hillside High School in Durham was placed on a brief lockdown Friday afternoon, August 28, after authorities received a report that someone may have been in possession of a weapon on campus.

The report prompted a law enforcement response as investigators moved to search the school and determine whether there was any immediate threat to students and staff.

Authorities conducted a search of the Hillside High School campus but did not find a weapon, according to information reported by WRAL. The precautionary lockdown was subsequently lifted at approximately 3:45 p.m.

Investigation Underway

The circumstances surrounding the initial report remain under investigation. Officials have not indicated whether a specific individual was identified in connection with the report or whether any arrests were made.

The incident caused concern among students, parents and members of the Durham community, particularly as Hillside has experienced other security-related incidents in recent months.

Earlier this month, Hillside High School and the Durham School of Technology were placed under lockdown following a reported threat. That August 13 incident also prompted a law enforcement response and campus investigation.

Friday’s lockdown was lifted after investigators searched the campus and found no weapon, allowing the school to move out of the emergency security posture.

There have been no reports in the information currently available of injuries connected to Friday’s incident.

Developing Story

Officials are continuing to investigate the report that prompted the lockdown. Additional information about the circumstances leading to the alert may be released as authorities complete their investigation.

Parents, students and staff are encouraged to rely on official communications from Durham Public Schools and law enforcement for further updates.

This is a developing story. Further details will be reported as they are confirmed by authorities.
