Boston, Massachusetts, is mourning the loss of Debbie “Storm” Clark, the former American Gladiators star who became known to television audiences for her athleticism and competitive spirit. Clark died Monday, August 24, at her home in Boston at the age of 61.

Clark’s son, Crayton, shared news of her passing. He said her pacemaker stopped working and believed she suffered cardiac arrest. An official cause of death has not been confirmed.

Born in Connecticut in 1965, Clark developed a strong athletic background through basketball, soccer, and track and field. She later pursued her goal of competing for the U.S. Olympic handball team.

Her path to American Gladiators began in 1991 while she was training in Colorado. After seeing the television series, Clark travelled to Los Angeles intending to audition as a Contender. Her athletic ability caught the attention of an assistant producer, however, and she was invited to try out as a Gladiator.

She ultimately joined the cast and became known as Storm, making her television debut that same year. She competed in events including Powerball and Joust and quickly established herself as a formidable presence on the popular competition series.

Clark also participated in the American Gladiators Live Tour, including helping open the tour by singing the U.S. national anthem. A serious ACL injury suffered during Powerball eventually affected her career with the Gladiators.

Beyond television, Clark faced significant personal challenges, including a period of homelessness that she later discussed publicly in hopes of encouraging others facing hardship.

For those who followed her career, however, Debbie Clark was more than the athlete known as Storm. She was also a mother who remained devoted to her son, Crayton.
