MANUREWA, AUCKLAND — Two people have died following a serious incident at a property on Gambare Place in Wattle Downs, with police launching a double-homicide investigation and searching for the person or people believed to be responsible. Emergency services were called to the address at about 1:45 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2026, after reports of an unresponsive woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene. During a subsequent search of the property, police found a man who was also pronounced dead. Police said the suspected offender or offenders had left before officers arrived and remained at large as the investigation continued. Police Manhunt Underway Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Va’aelua said police teams would continue working through the night to locate those responsible and determine exactly what happened. Police said the incident appeared to be isolated at this stage, although investigators were not ruling anything out while inquiries continued. A significant police presence was deployed around Gambare Place, Volante Avenue and nearby streets, with armed officers and cordons in place as investigators examined the scene. Schools Placed Into Lockdown The incident prompted nearby schools to enter lockdown as police responded. Schools in the surrounding Manurewa and Wattle Downs area were affected, with the lockdown later lifted after authorities determined students could leave safely. The police operation also temporarily prevented some residents from returning to their homes while officers secured the area. Investigation Continues Police have not yet released the identities of the two people who died. Formal identification procedures and post-mortem examinations are expected as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
