Kathryn Binkley and Margaret Collins Shooting Greensboro, NC Death, Obituary – Two Women Killed in Tragic Shooting

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro community is mourning the deaths of Kathryn Binkley, 73, and Margaret Collins, 76, following a shooting Sunday evening on Creswell Court.

Police said officers, Greensboro Fire, Guilford County EMS and Guilford County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 6:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.

When first responders arrived, they found both women suffering from gunshot wounds. Binkley was pronounced dead at the scene, while Collins was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Police later confirmed that Collins had died from her injuries.

Authorities identified Michael Wade Hargett, 64, as the suspected shooter. Police said Hargett was a neighbor and barricaded himself inside a nearby residence following the shooting.

The Greensboro Police Department’s Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team responded. Officers eventually entered the residence and arrested Hargett. Police said he was also found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities have said they are not searching for additional suspects.

The shooting has left family members, friends and neighbors grieving the loss of Binkley and Collins. Their deaths have also added to concerns about violence in the Greensboro community.

According to police, Binkley’s death marked Greensboro’s 16th homicide of 2026.

Investigators have not released a possible motive or provided additional information about what happened before the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
